Nelson Bays Tennis Association is a not for profit sporting organisation, and has the responsibility for the promotion, development and administration of tennis in the Nelson Bays Region, incorporating its 13 affiliated clubs.
The 13 clubs affiliated to Tennis Nelson, represent 1143 members.
Nelson Bays Tennis manages an extensive inter-club competition, runs numerous tournaments for both juniors and seniors, and facilitates the development of Junior tennis through a 'Tennis in Schools' programme.

Steve Molnar takes the Double |

Nelson Bay's tennis Veteran Steve Molnar took out the double at the 2012 Tennis Seniors NZ National Championships that took place in Tauranga last week and over the weekend. Molnar competing in the 65+ age group category and seeded 4th cruised through to the final without dropping a set, knocking out second seed Graeme Thompson 6-2, 6-2 in the semi finals. Molnar then met top seed and his doubles partner David Hawkes who have many battles over the years. Molnar took a while to get going and dropped the first set 2-6, but then found form and took out the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-3 and the NZ title.
Molnar and Hawkes seeded number one in the doubles, had a tight semi final battle against Laurie Greene and Allan Dickey but pulled out a strong performance in the third set to take the match 6-3 6-7 6-3.
In the final they met second seeds John Cook and Graeme Thompson and it was to be
another tough 3 set encounter. Molnar and Hawkes dropped
the first set 3-6, but took full control in the next two sets winning 6-1, 6-3. |

In the 10's boys Nelson's Luca Molnar and Wakefields Marshall Hore came head to head in the final of the consolation plate. Hore took out the match 9-5. Both these boys are only 8 years old and this season is their first summer of competing in tournaments so they're gaining great experience. In the 12's boys Corbin McFadyen of Motueka won his first round match against Douglas Williams 6-3, 6-1 but lost his second round match to Joshua Gwynne 6-1, 6-4. Renze van Duijn lost his first round match to Gwynne 6-0, 6-1, however found form and produced some great tennis in the plate making it to the final. In a match that went right down to the wire. Van Duijin was pipped at the post being defeated by Sam Cameron-Dunn 6-1 5-7 12-10. Ryan Thompson won the consolation plate 9-8 beating Tom Burns in the final. Sam Edens in the 14's boys was knocked out in the first round main draw by Mitchell Smith 6-3, 6-2, however went on to win the plate final over fellow Nelson competitor Melle van Duijn 6-0, 6-2. The top 4 places in the 16's boys were all from Nelson with Henry Neas taking out the 16's boys title beating club mate Ben Petley in the final 6-1, 6-4. Aidan MacKenzie took 3rd place over George Harris 6-2, 6-1. It was a good weekend for Neas teaming up with Marlborough's Andrew Forgesson to take the doubles title 6-3, 6-3 over MacKenzie and Petley. In the girls combined 12's/14's Monique Hore had a strong first round win in the main draw over Annabelle Wilson 7-5, 6-3. Hore was then knocked out by the top seed but went on to win the consolation plate 9-3 over Stella Hooper. In the 16's girls Marlborough's top seed Lilly O'Fagan withdrew therefore giving Nelson's Laura Roberts an opportunity to shine. Roberts lost the final to Michal Matson 6-3, 6-1. Nelson's top juniors will now be in full training for the Nelson Junior Open coming up at the end of March. |

Juniors Perform well at West Coast Open |

February 20th Nelson tennis players travelled to Greymouth to compete in the West Coast Solid Energy Junior Tournament.
A name that we'll be hearing a lot more of in the coming years is Monique Hore who had a very successful tournament. Hore won the 10's girls Singles and Doubles and was runner-up in the mixed where she teamed up with younger brother Marshall. She also competed in the 12's age group winning the Doubles and coming runner-up in the singles.
Marshall Hore was also runner up in the 10's boys doubles.
Hope junior Sean Cavill was runner-up in the 14's boys consolation plate. Sam Edens of Richmond Club made it through to the semis in the 14's doubles.
Ryan Thompson received the 12's boys fair play award.
A number of Nelson Juniors will be competing in the Marlborough Junior Open this coming weekend.
