107 primary and intermediate children competed in the primary and intermediate schools championships on the 4th and 5th of November.
The first day of play in the primary event Ben Hazlett beat Sam Chapman 9-1, and in the plate final Miles Sandston beat David Zohrab 6-5. Emma Kynaston beat Frances Clark in the girls final. Day two of the Nelson Bays regional primary schools tournament took place on Thursday with the intermediate school students playing. In the girls which was played at the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club the top seed Jessica Bell of Broadgreen intermediate was knocked out in the quarter final by Aleasha Pyers of Nelson Intermediate in a close battle 9-7. Pyers continued her winning streak in the semi final beating Erin Bradnock 7-5, 6-0 advancing her through to the final. In the other semi final Hannah Waine of Broadgreen intermediate seeded second cruised through her semi final match against Ellie Bell of Nelson Prep 6-0, 6-1, setting up a Pyers and Waine final. Waine was in control of the match right from the beginning however the 6-0, 6-0 score line over Pyers was not a true indication of the long intense rally's. The plate final was won by Nina Lewis over Brittany Mark in a tiebreak 9-8, and the special plate was won by Nciki Feilding over Libby Gray in another close encounter 9-7. In the boys at the Tasman Tennis Centre in Richmond Henry Neas of Nelson Prep cruised through his semi final match over Todd Johnstone of Waimea Intermediate 9-2. In the other semi final Aiden MacKenzie of Broadgreen Intermediate also was in form beating George Harris 9-1, setting up a Neas and MacKenzie final. A final that was to last over 2 hours, with Neas taking the first set 6-3, MacKenzie then took out the 2nd set 3-6. Neas gained compsure and took out the third set 6-3.
